Writing Review

Hey guys,

Just something quick. I have uploaded a Sample Outline for the Writing Review to the blog. You can find it linked in this post and on the Writing Review assignment page.

It’s basically just the questions from the assignment prompt, but it gives an order for how you may want to organize your responses to the questions in the assignment.

Hope your semesters are coming to an end peacefully. Good luck with your finals!

Best,

Ms. Stovall

Week 15 Reminders

For Next Week:

  • As I mentioned in last week’s blog post, your Writing Review is due on May 10th by 11:59:59pm. That’s next Thursday, y’all. Please don’t blow this assignment off just because it is the last one of the semester– after all, your Writing Review is weighted 4, which means it counts more toward your overall grade than a typical Brief Assignment (which is weighted 3).
  • You might want to review the Week 14 PPT as you prepare to write your Writing Review, as I went over some important stipulations regarding this assignment in that presentation.
  • Remember that you MUST take the end of semester diagnostic and discuss those results in your Review, especially in comparison to your pre-semester diagnostic score. Failure to do this will negatively impact your grade. (If you are one of the few students who was not able to take the pre-semester diagnostic, just explain the situation in your Writing Review.)
  • You will find a link to the end of the semester diagnostic on your Raider Writer homepage. Simply click on the link that says this: “Take Your Spring End of Semester Diagnostic.”
  • You will find that the link to the pre-semester diagnostic is gone. So if you need to refresh your memory about what your pre-semester diagnostic score was, then you should refer back to your Brief Assignment One.
  • The diagnostic will remain available until the last Writing Reviews are turned in. After that, you will no longer be able to take the diagnostic.
  • I will not be available in person today, but you can e-mail me any questions between now and 5pm today. I will answer all incoming e-mails as soon as I get them as I will be at the computer. I will also hold my regular office hours on Monday (May 7th) between 2-3pm in Room 102 if you need me. I will only be available by e-mail after that. However, if you need to make an appointment to see me in person, just e-mail me.
  • Also, remember that your participation grades are now in Raider Writer. If you need to talk to me about those, you need to e-mail me ASAP as final grades will be input at the latest on May 20th.

Other Announcements:

It’s been a pleasure teaching ya’ll this semester!

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Week 14 Reminders

For the coming weeks:

  • Your Draft 2.2 is due on Tuesday, May 1st by 11:59:59pm. Don’t forget about this! The Draft 2.2 Grading Criteria is something you’ll want to look at when you’re finishing up your draft as well.
  • Your Writing Review is due on Thursday, May 10th by 11:59:59pm! (Remember, we are not having class next week, but I will be sending out an e-mail reminding you of this due date when it gets closer.) Please see the Writing Review Grading Criteria on this as well. I will let you all know how to access the post-diagnostic exam when it is updated on the blog and through e-mail.
  • Your participation grades will be put into Raider Writer within the next 24 hours. I have them done, and I will be getting them in as soon as I can. I suggest checking your participation grade and e-mailing me ASAP if there is a problem.
  • The PowerPoint from class yesterday is now available on the blog here and on the Misc. Documents page. I would suggest paying close attention to slides 12-14 on what a writing review is and is not.
  • I am moving my hours from Thursday up to Tuesday this coming week so that I can be available to help you guys with last minute changes to your Draft 2.2s. I will, unfortunately, not be holding my hours on Monday either. However, I will be available from 12:00pm-4:00pm on Tuesday (05/01) in room ENGL/PHIL 102. If you cannot meet during those hours, we can schedule an appointment, but you must e-mail me.
  • Again, it’s been a pleasure teaching you all this semester. I will be in contact about the due date for the Writing Review and about the post-diagnostic exam for that assignment.

Week 13 Reminders

For Next Week:

  • Peer Critiques 2.1a and 2.1b are due by 11:59pm on Tuesday, April 24th in Raider Writer!!! Remember, there are two different drafts that you will be critiquing! Make sure that you submit the right critiques with the right drafts. Your graders will be checking your critiques against the drafts you’ve critiqued!
  • Bring in a copy of your most up-to-date researched argument draft to next class. We really will be using it this time in an in-class activity.
  • Do Reading 14.
  • Do the Writing Review Prep Assignment. This is your LAST PREP ASSIGNMENT, guys! You’ve made it to the other side! (alive and well, I hope)

Other Announcements:

  • In class on Thursday, I went over a few pointers for your peer critiques this time around. If you need a refresher, reviewing the class PPT might be helpful. Reviewing the PPT from the first set of peer critiques might be helpful too!

Week 12 Reminders

For Next Week:

  • No assignment due in Raider Writer next week, so really work on editing/revising your draft 2.1s and preparing for peer critiques.
  • Your Peer Critique 2.1a & 2.1b Prep Assignment is due in class next week on Thursday, April 19th. Print out your completed prep assignment and bring it to class to receive credit.
  • Bring in a copy of your most recently revised Draft 2.1 to class next week as we may be looking at them at some point.
  • Do Reading 13.

Other Reminders:

  • If you need to see the PowerPoint from class today, you can find it on the Misc. Documents page. You may want to review some of the videos we looked at to see what types of arguments (whether successful or unsuccessful) are being made, or you may want to look at the grammar comic that we looked at for future reference. All of these can be found on the PowerPoint.
  • The PowerPoint from class also includes the link to the short grammar component of the class regarding commonly misspelled words.

Week 11 Reminders

For Next Week:

1. Draft 2.1 is due by 11:59pm on Tuesday, 4/10. Check out the Draft 2.1 Grading Criteria.

2. Do Reading 12!

3. Your Prep Assignment for next week is to print out the Draft 2.1 you turned in because we will be workshopping it in class next week. Bring the printed out copy to class!

Other Announcements:

1. In addition to referring to the Draft 2.1 checklist as you write your essay, remember that there is a sample Draft 2.1 in the appendix of your First-Year Writing text.

2. Oh, and here are some graded sample 2.1s. You’ll recognize the first one from class!

3. In case you missed class, here is the Week 11 PowerPoint.
